- LESSON #2 (Ceacht a dó)
-
-
- I. Grammar
-
-
- PRONOUNS AS SUBJECT OF THE SENTENCE
-
- I mé
- you (to one person) tú
- he sé
- she sí
- --
- you (to more than one person) sibh
- they siad
-
- we ... varies with the dialect ...
- In some dialects, it is "muid" and appears as a separate pronoun,
- in others ( & in this series of lessons) it appears as a suffix
- "-mid" that is tacked on to the end of the verb. You will see how this
- works below.
-
-
- THE VERB "TO BE"
-
- There are two different verbs "to be" in Irish. This lesson introduces
- one of these, the verb Tá .
-
- Tá is the present tense of the verb "to be" in all persons,
- singular and plural, and therefore translates as "am", "are", "is".
-
- In an Irish sentence the verb comes before the subject. The noun or
- pronoun subject follows immediately after the verb.
-
- So ... I am = Tá mé
- You are = Tá tú
- He is = Tá sé
- She is = Tá sí
- We are = Táimid
- You are = Tá sibh
- They are = Tá siad
-
-
- Construction: Tá [article] [noun] [adjective]
- e.g. Tá an bóthar fada. = The road is long.
-
- Tá [pronoun] [adjective]
- e.g. Tá mé ramhar. = I am fat.
- Táimid laidir. = We are strong.
-
-
- In this construction the adjective does not have to be declined
- (i.e. does not have to be made to agree with the noun). In later lessons you
- will see that adjectives in other situations have to be declined.)
-
-
- II. Vocabulary
-
- bed leaba [l'ab@]
- bedroom seomra leapa [s'omr@ l'ab@]

- others the "r".
